For our second and last night in Dijon, we went to Le Saint Fiacre, 15 Rue Vauban, because it looked really nice and fresh, with an interesting menu.
It was a National Music Day, so the restaurant had a duo playing outside: a keyboard player and woman vocalist. They were good, but a bit loud for us, so we dined inside.
It ended up that we were the only diners inside: everyone else was outside listening to the music.
I ordered a fillet steak cooked "a point" (medium rare). When I cut into it, the steak was grey. Cutting through the centre of the steak revealed
a slight trace of pink. I quietly called a waitress over, pointed to the steak, and said "Ce n'est pas a point". She looked worried, and took
it away. A minute or so later, she brought it back, saying that the chef said it was a point. I replied firmly that it was not, and my wife
observed that it was "bien cuit" (well done). The waitress took it away again, and this time came back saying a replacement would be cooked.
Meanwhile, my wife started on her "farandole de gambas": prawns and scallops on squid ink pasta. The prawns and scallops were excellent: fresh and
properly cooked. The pasta was rather strange and over-cooked to the point of being soggy.
My replacement steak was brought and was very good: properly cooked "a point".Then dessert. The waiter correctly brought mille
feuilles for my wife, but brought me a cafe gourmand when I had ordered fondue au chocolat. When I protested, he brought a menu and said I
has pointed at cafe gourmand which was immediately below the chocolat in the menu list. I responded that I had clearly said "fondue au chocolat".
With rather bad grace, the waiter removed my dessert and came back a few minutes later with the right one. Which was good.
I understand that Le Saint Fiacre is quite new. The food that we ate was pretty good overall, but there seem to be some glitches in both the food
and the cooking that need to be overcome. The bill, including a €24 bottle of wine, came to €88.40. For once, I left no tip at all. (Sent by email)
